According to recent statistics there are more than 8,000 homeless in the Charlotte urban area. Room in the Inn is a way to bring alive the Biblical admonition to Love Thy Neighbor. In fact, the homeless served by this mission through Urban Ministry of Charlotte are referred to as neighbors. The simple goal of Room in the Inn is to keep the homeless Children of God from freezing on cold winter nights.
The program runs through March 31. Mill Grove will house twelve neighbors once a week each Friday night during this period of time. For safety, these neighbors will be screened for drugs or alcohol before they are allowed to board the vehicles at Urban Ministry Center.
We will need three personal vehicles both for picking up the neighbors Friday night at 5pm from the Urban Ministry Center. and for transporting them to the Charlotte Transit Center by 9:30am Saturday morning. Greeters will meet the neighbors upon their arrival at Mill Grove and converse with them during the evening meal. Cook teams will provide a substantial dinner meal and a breakfast Saturday morning. These meals will be prepared either at home and brought to the church for the neighbors or prepared in the church kitchen. We will need volunteers to fold laundry that will have been cleaned by Countryside Cleaners in Mint Hill, to prepare bedding and toiletries. prepare sack lunches for the neighbors to take with them on Saturday, cleanup Saturday morning, and at least two overnight innkeepers, one being male, to spend the night Friday.
Plans are to serve dinner in Room 217 and sleeping arrangements in Rooms 213-216. Monthly sign-up sheets will be available by mid October. Your team will need to volunteer once a month unless you desire to serve more often.
